Roxi Crowned Rajshahi Champions: Grassroots Pathway to National Ambition in Women's Football

Roxi Football Academy defeated Shahid Bir Muktijoddha Abdus Sattar Krira Academy 2-1 in the Rajshahi regional final, becoming the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 Prothom Alo-Star News Women's Football Tournament. After beating Sunrise Football Academy 4-0 in the morning semi-final, they also won the afternoon final. Seven goals in four matches—this is not just a local tournament result, but a display of a talent powerhouse. In the final, Papia Akter’s goal in the 9th minute gave Roxi the lead, but Nurina equalised in the 12th minute. However, a decisive winning goal by Alefa Akter in the 35th minute proved Roxi’s superior game management. Tactically, the match was high-tempo. Roxi’s defensive resilience, combined with their attacking output, proved they were a mature team. Conversely, Abdus Sattar Krira Academy’s 3-0 semi-final win showed the final was a close contest, with fatigue and pressure being the likely causes of their defeat. The tournament’s financial structure is based on a media-sponsor-district committee model. Nabil Group’s Head of Marketing, Akhtaruzzaman, presented the player-of-the-match award to Papia Akter, highlighting the commercial aspect of the event. The presence of national team defender Sheuli Azim and her statement, “I want these players to play for the national team,” transformed this local stadium into a national scouting hub, initiating a long-term talent feed cycle from academy pathways to the national team. In the coming weeks, with the quarter-finals scheduled for the last week of October at Daffodil International University ground, a significant step-up in quality will occur. This is where Roxi Football Academy’s game plan, recovery, and mental preparation will be truly tested.
